Soldier Profile: William Curl

Today's soldier profile is William "Burr" Curl

William was born around 1840 in Hardin County, Ohio, and died on 8 July 1911 in West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois. 

He married my husband's ancestor, Mary Serina "Givene" Dunston, in 1860. 

According to this Union Compiled Service Record, William served in the 57th Ohio Infantry in Company K. His regiment fought in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and other southern states. 

William earned the rank of Corporal. 

Throughout his service, the regiment William served in lost numerous officers and enlisted men. Despite these losses, he managed to survive and returned home to his family.  


Census records indicate that he worked as a day laborer and a farmer.  


William lived to be about 71 years old (8 July 1911) and was laid to rest in Otterbein Cemetery in Berryville, Illinois.

The Mystery of the War Time Sweethearts

I have another intriguing photo mystery to share. I’m eager to reunite this photo with its original family. I discovered it in Colorado. Google Images suggests that the photo was likely taken in the 1940s or 1950s. The vehicle appears to be a cab-over engine model. The man is dressed in a casual military uniform. They look like a lovely couple. The setting seems to be rural or semi-mountainous, where the photo was taken. If this photograph resembles something you recognize, I would be thrilled if you could leave a clue in the comments. Together, we might be able to identify the couple and return the photo to their family (or even to them). ❤️
